Discover Baku in One Day

A practical plan for seeing Baku’s Old City, panoramic viewpoints, modern architecture and seafront in one private day.

Discover Baku in One Day

One day is enough to understand why Baku surprises so many visitors: medieval walls and caravanserais sit a short walk from glass towers and one of the most photographed buildings of the century. Here is how we plan a full day in the city.

Morning: the Old City

Start early in Icherisheher, the walled Old City, which became Azerbaijan’s first UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. The lanes are quiet before ten, which makes it the best time to see the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the 15th-century residence of the rulers of Shirvan. Allow about two hours, more if you go inside both.

Midday: views over the bay

From the Old City it is a short drive up to Highland Park and Martyrs’ Lane. The terrace looks over the whole Bay of Baku, with the three Flame Towers right behind you. This is also a good moment for lunch; ask us for a place that matches your taste.

Afternoon: modern Baku

The Heydar Aliyev Center, designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2012, is worth seeing even if you only walk around the outside. If you have energy left, finish on the seafront Boulevard or at the Carpet Museum, a building shaped like a rolled carpet.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes: the Old City is cobbled and has slopes.
  • Entry tickets are paid on site, roughly $9 each for the Maiden Tower, the Shirvanshahs’ Palace and the Heydar Aliyev Center.
  • Late afternoon light is the most beautiful time for the Flame Towers and the bay.

Our Baku Full Day Tour follows this plan with a private car and a local host, and we adjust it to your pace.
